position summary:
the nurse extern will support our summer staff and volunteer nurses with direct care of campers. This includes activities of daily living such as grooming, dressing, bathing, eating, and exercising; as well as medical procedure support including bowel programs and feeding tube care. This position seeks a passion for working with children with complex medical conditions, values teamwork and is easily flexible. The nurse extern also assists the nursing staff with medical tasks including blood draws, monitoring vitals with medical equipment and reporting patient behavior and wellbeing to appropriate staff. In addition, the nurse extern will support the medical team to maintain the depot operations. This position is a seasonal summer position that will be part of the summer medical team. This position lives in a cabin and is expected to be with campers throughout the day. This position will report to the nursing & medical operations director (nmod) as well as support the nursing coordinator and clinical nurse manager.
position dates: may 12th-august 10th including training; specific work days/days off aligned with the summer camp schedule will be provided.
job responsibilities:
* nurse externs provide basic care for campers, working under the direction of the summer staff nurses and under the supervision of the nmod.
* collaborate with the medical team (nmod, medical director, nursing coordinator, clinical nurse manager, summer staff nurses, volunteer physicians/providers, volunteer nurses) and program camp staff to ensure that campers are provided with the highest quality of basic care needs.
* nurse externs will support the basic medical needs and adls of campers during each camp session, including supporting appropriate medical treatments in conjunction with a cabin nurse.
job duties:
* under the direction of the cabin nurse, support medication distribution as scheduled or as needed to campers.
* provide basic support and preparation for procedures as scheduled and as necessary for each camper, including the care of internal and external central lines, dressing changes, g-tube and other continuous/bolus feeds, urinary catheters, etc.
* collaborate with nursing coordinator to maintain and organize inventory and the overall care and operations of the depot, including uploading medical records, documentation and medical laundry.
* support nurses with medical oversight, triage and first aid as needed at high-risk activity areas.
* document and keep records of medical care, including data entry and use of online database and online logbook.
* ensure confidentiality of medical information and medical records at camp.
* work in partnership with the medical and camp team to provide support education to camp staff and volunteers.
* support the volunteer orientation process and preparation as delegated by the medical team.
* serve as an educational resource for staff and volunteers regarding the illnesses and medical needs of their specific campers.
* provide guidance and support to cabin medical volunteers as assigned.
* collaborate with the behavioral health team and cabin life team to support behavioral needs.
* may be asked to travel or drive a camp vehicle with campers for local or emergent care, or to obtain medical supplies and medications.

minimum qualifications:
* one year of nursing school with a pediatric interest and/or formal recommendation from nursing professor noting the ability to fulfill the job description.
* qualifies as nurse externship.

special conditions: this is a residential position. Accommodation will be provided for the duration of the contract and meals will be provided while camp is in session.
