job description
seasoned cae (computer aided engineering) engineer with a background in computational fluid dynamics (cfd) simulations to guide and perform full vehicle thermal analysis to support vehicle program delivery. A deep understanding of vehicle components and operations is a must. Partner with the thermal program engineer to develop the right thermal environment for all under hood/body components and influence components design/package/routings from the beginning to the end of the ford product development process to achieve optimum vehicle energy management and usage. With a creative and analytical mind, the thermal cae engineer will use key insights to detect potential thermal inefficiencies and issues, explore new opportunities, design optimization, and guide under hood/body component design for our vehicles in development. Working as a team player, the engineer will create impact by collaborating across the cae programs and all other key work partners throughout the company.
responsibilities
* lead and perform full vehicle transient thermal cae models from start to finish (cad data collection, clean up, meshing, boundary conditions setup, and post-processing).
* perform and support powertrain cooling cae 3d airflow analysis, heat exchanger/fan sizing, heat exchanger arrangement, and front-end opening. Assist front end opening and grill designs optimization to meet vehicle airflow and performance targets throughout vehicle development phases.
* perform cae assessment on exterior design proposals from studio. Support design theme selection process throughout studio design process.
* collaborate with the thermal program team and key work partners in the company to frame the right thermal environment for every under hood/body component.
* communicate and work closely with aerodynamics engineers to optimize design and balance between thermal and aerodynamics.
* interface with the ford global team (global thermal team, cad, cae integration, d&r, and other attributes).
* ensure high-quality cae results and solutions throughout the design process.
* guide and develop the process of non-geometric data collections and usage.
* continuously innovate and search for cae process improvement focusing on accuracy, cae capability, cad to results turnaround timing, and cost.
* make technical recommendations on design optimization, issue resolutions, and countermeasures based on engineering judgment and interpretation of cae results.
* share and present work to thermal program engineers, departmental partners, and leadership.
* document all cae work and results as per the ford thermal process to ensure task traceability.
qualifications
* masters of science in mechanical or aeronautical engineering or higher with a focus on fluid mechanics/heat transfer/hv battery.
* 3+ years of experience in the field of product engineering.
* 5+ years of experience in using cfd and cad tools to perform full vehicle thermal cfd analysis. Required tools: catia/3dx/teamcenter, ansa/hypermesh, taitherm, ccm+/uh3d/openfoam, ensight, etc.
preferred qualifications:
* familiarity with major oem/ford gpds vehicle development process.
* familiarity with vehicle under hood/body components (ice, fhev, phev).
* cae project leadership experience (team lead).
