As a field engineer at amazon, you will be responsible for providing full support to aws data centers throughout their lifecycle, from project initiation to maintenance and improvement of facilities. You will serve as the primary engineering resource in your region, offering technical advice and expertise to other teams, including:
• solving problems, conducting root cause analysis (rca), and creating corrective action plans (cap) for electromechanical equipment failures.
• supporting the physical infrastructure operation team with training, operational procedure reviews, and event support.
• proposing existing data center upgrades and design solutions that add capacity, improve availability, increase energy efficiency, and sustainability.
• collaborating with internal operations, project engineering, hardware engineering, health and safety, and environmental teams to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in services provided.
• working on concurrent projects across multiple geographic regions.
• initiating and leading engineering audits on cooling, power distribution, fire protection, and other systems, including site visits to amazon data centers.
• producing technical reports describing availability risks with recommended mitigations and remediations.
• acting as a resident engineer during new construction projects, supporting execution, commissioning, and transfer for operation.
key job responsibilities
as a field engineer, you will play a crucial role in adapting our data centers to meet increasing customer needs as we continue to expand our fleet on a large scale. To be successful, you should possess:
• strong engineering judgment and ability to provide recommendations despite uncertainty/ambiguity.
• attention to detail and data-driven decision-making.
• experience solving problems with engineering solutions.
• project management and engineering consultancy experience.
• ability to build trust and relationships with various stakeholders, including operations, automation, construction, design, commissioning, product managers, technical program managers, and others.
• adaptability and willingness to enter the field to see things up close.
• enthusiasm for a mix of office and field work.
a day in the life
every day, you'll interact with different teams responsible for all aspects of data centers, prioritizing activities to support availability and security of data center servers. You'll have opportunities to work on local and global projects, requiring fluent english communication skills.
about the team
the field engineering team covers the entire lifecycle of data centers, from initial design to execution of retrofit plans. Field engineers are typically the first point of contact for customers seeking technical advice on mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and hydraulic solutions.
the team analyzes field problems to propose local and large-scale solutions, preventing recurrence. Additionally, they collect and analyze data to propose predictive actions aimed at eliminating risks before they become critical events in physical infrastructure data centers.
requirements
to succeed in this role, you should have:
• bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
• over 3 cumulative years of experience with industrial or commercial engineering in mission-critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, oil/gas facilities.
• fluent english communication skills, essential for interaction with professionals worldwide.
• organized and able to set priorities and meet deadlines.
• leadership and problem-solving skills.
• experience with calculation and data processing tools.
• direct experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission-critical facilities, especially data centers.
• experience as a resident engineer or technical design/engineering consultant for the client.
• knowledge of construction and assembly rules and regulations in your region.
• experience reading, interpreting, and creating technical drawings, such as pipes, single-line diagrams, process diagrams, and technical specifications of equipment and components.
• excellent communication and writing skills.
• understanding of mechanical and/or electrical equipment/projects related to data centers, including hvac, power distribution, fire protection systems, and others.
• experience with monitoring systems (epms/scada/bms).
• meets/exceeds the requirements of amazon's leadership principles.
