commitment: 40 hours a week (full-time). The position is offered on an initial 6-month trial contract with a probation review at 3 and 6 months, extendable to two years subject to satisfactory performance. Gi-escr is open to considering job-shares and flexible working arrangements as proposed during the recruitment process.
pay: usd $120,000 - $130,000 – remuneration will be determined by the candidate's experience and adjusted to the relative cost of living of the successful candidate's location.

i - the global initiative for economic, social and cultural rights
(gi-escr)
gi-escr is a non-governmental organisation that believes transformative change to end endemic problems of economic and social injustice is possible only through a human rights lens.
since 2011, gi-escr has been involved in groundbreaking work that has resulted in critical policy decisions, judicial decisions, and the effective implementation of esc rights at the national, regional, and global levels. Working closely with local partners, gi-escr has achieved pronouncements on protecting women's rights to land and productive resources and their implementation.
working closely with partners, gi-escr has advanced new frontiers in economic, social and cultural rights. It has played a bridging role in ensuring that human rights advocates have the opportunity and capacity to engage and infuse international human rights spaces with the experiences of rights holders on the ground and partner with movements.
ii - the position
the successful candidate will lead the organisation to deliver its vision and strategy and ensure its long-term success and health. The executive director will be a leader who collaborates globally with the gi-escr team and its partners. A critical task will be taking the organisation to the next level of development and increasing diversity of funding.
key responsibilities:
1. Strategy development & initiative oversight
- deliver a strategic framework which enables gi-escr to further its vision and mission.
- think creatively and strategically about human rights norm development to shape a progressive understanding of the human rights framework with a particular focus on economic, social and cultural rights.
- build relationships with donors, staff, global partners and social movements.
- partnerships
- support the team in working closely with global, regional, national,
and local partners, including partners from marginalised communities. This work will require empathy, listening, and learning from the perspectives of our partners on the ground, as well as letting them take the lead in their advocacy while providing advice on human rights and access to human rights mechanisms.
- create dialogue and awareness of organisational activities and achievements and represent gi-escr in human rights fora.
- resource mobilisation
- lead the preparation and implementation of a strategy for resource mobilisation and enhance visibility and reputation for the organisation.
- work with existing and potential donors to secure a sustainable funding model and consolidate funding relationships with new donors.
- develop programme and project proposals and actively undertake fundraising for general support and programmatic activities.
- leadership, people and culture
- recruit and retain the best possible talent for the organisation to deliver the strategic plan and objectives.
- provide strong leadership, working with the team to make gi-escr a fulfilling place to work – building upon its culture of trust, respect, and innovation.
- operations
- deliver the internal strategic and financial planning and impact framework to ensure results are consistently delivered to a high standard and appropriately monitored and evaluated.
- monitor all areas of the organisation and its activities to ensure progress against deliverables and budget.
- ensure relevant work streams, mechanisms, and processes are in place for the day-to-day running of all organisational aspects.
- finance
- accountable for the financial performance of the gi-escr,
including ensuring fundraising targets are met.
- ensure robust budget and financial planning, monitoring and control mechanisms are in place.
- governance
- work with gi-escr's board and assist board structures and committees where needed.
- regularly update and engage gi-escr's board, and any other governance bodies on progress against strategy and key operational objectives.
candidate profile
- an advanced university degree (master's or equivalent) in human rights, social science, public policy, or other fields relevant to the work may be accepted instead of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree and 15 additional years of qualifying experience may also be accepted. A phd or equivalent attainment is desirable.
- 10-15 years of progressively responsible experience in human rights.
- deep expertise in economic, social and cultural rights and familiarity with field trends, challenges and opportunities.
- demonstrated experience building and managing successful teams.
- demonstrated experience in fundraising for non-profit organisations is required.
- experience working with civil society, preferably advocating for systemic change.
